Zoogeography in folklore in “Geography of Brazilian Myths” by Luís da Câmara Cascudo
Abstract
In order to investigate existing relationships between biogeography and other fields of knowledge, this research addresses the zoogeography present in the book Geography of Brazilian Myths (2022), by Luís da Câmara Cascudo. The aim was to ascertain the possibility of connections between the myths described in the aforementioned book and the fauna from which each myth was collected. To this end, we used Chapter 5 of Zoogeography of Brazil (2018), entitled "The Brazilian Zoogeographical Provinces and Their Faunistic Patterns," by Roberto Marques Neto, in which the author addresses the six Brazilian zoogeographical provinces based on Fittkau (1969) proposition for zoogeographical provinces of South America. The meticulous description of the faunal patterns of each zoogeographical province presented in this chapter, especially regarding mammals, allowed us to verify the occurrence of animals with characteristics compatible with the animalistic characteristics present in some myths of the book in the region where this myth is disseminated. Thus, in the analysis of myths in the light of zoogeography, it was possible to observe evident relationships between the fauna and the mythology expressed by Câmara Cascudo, in the sense that 44 of the 45 animal myths analyzed have animals with corresponding characteristics occurring in the zoogeographical province that harbors the myth.
